Who these terms are between

These Terms & Conditions form an agreement between you and the operator trading as Own the Map (we, us or our) whenever you create or use an Own the Map account, website, Windows application, Steam build, itch.io edition, Discord bot or related service (the Service). If you do not agree, do not create an account or continue using the Service.

The Service is an evolving early-access game. Beta World and playtests are testing environments and may be less stable, incomplete or reset more often than Live World.

Eligibility and accounts

  • You must be at least 13 years old and meet any higher minimum age that applies where you live. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must approve any purchase.
  • Provide accurate registration information, keep login credentials secure and tell Support promptly if an account may be compromised.
  • One person must not use alternate accounts, automation or coordinated accounts to manipulate rewards, referrals, trades, Companies, leaderboards, demand, events or any other system.
  • Accounts, invitations, Beta access and privileges are personal. You may not sell, rent, transfer or share them.

The fictional game world

Own the Map is entertainment software. Every property, valuation, currency amount, rent, tax, licence, card, reward, business, vehicle, contract, Company and ownership claim is fictional game content.

  • Game ownership gives no ownership, access, tenancy, investment, financial interest or other right in real land, buildings, addresses, businesses or transport services.
  • Virtual currency and virtual items have no cash value, are not money, cannot be withdrawn and may not be sold or exchanged outside mechanisms expressly provided by us.
  • Map, address and place information may be incomplete, approximate, outdated or wrong. Do not use the game for navigation, emergencies, investment or real-property decisions.

Our right to operate and change the game

You authorise us to operate, secure, moderate and develop the Service. To keep a shared persistent economy playable, we may make reasonable changes at any time, with notice where practical.

  • We may add, remove, pause, replace or redesign features, maps, modes, rewards, objectives, events, Companies, virtual items, integrations and platform support.
  • We may change balance, prices, income, upkeep, demand, rarity, drop rates, licences, progression, prestige requirements, limits, cooldowns, multipliers and eligibility rules, including changes that affect existing virtual holdings.
  • We may correct mistakes, exploits, duplicated rewards, corrupted progress or unfair advantages; reverse or recalculate affected transactions; reclaim improperly obtained virtual items or currency; and restore accounts from reliable records.
  • We may schedule maintenance, limit capacity, suspend systems, reset Beta progress, separate Live and Beta data, or discontinue part or all of the Service. For a material discontinuation affecting paid content, we will respect rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.
  • Administrative decisions may use logs, economy records and anti-abuse signals. We will not use these powers to remove statutory consumer rights or excuse fraud, deliberate wrongdoing or liability that the law does not allow us to exclude.

Payments, supporter benefits and virtual items

  • Some cosmetics, themes, supporter memberships or other optional content may be sold through Stripe, Steam, Discord/MEE6 or another clearly identified checkout provider.
  • Prices, billing period, renewal status and included benefits are shown before purchase. A recurring membership continues until cancelled through the provider that sold it.
  • Supporter rewards are cosmetic or recognition-based and do not promise a competitive advantage, permanent server operation or ownership of game assets.
  • Platform and payment-provider rules may also apply. Refunds, faulty digital content and cancellation rights are handled in accordance with applicable law and the relevant provider process.
  • Unless the law requires otherwise, used virtual items and consumed or time-limited benefits are not transferable between accounts and are lost when the account is deleted.

Acceptable use

Play fairly and lawfully. You must not:

  • use bots, scripts, macros, scraping, unauthorised clients, exploits, packet manipulation or other automation to play, claim, farm, scan, trade, refer or progress;
  • probe security, evade limits or enforcement, disrupt the Service, overload providers, reverse engineer protected components, or access another person’s account or non-public data;
  • pump value or rewards through alternate accounts, collusion, sham activity, misleading referrals or transactions with no genuine gameplay purpose;
  • harass, threaten, discriminate, impersonate, dox, sexually exploit, scam or post illegal, infringing or harmful content;
  • misrepresent the game as real property, an investment, gambling, financial advice or a way to earn withdrawable money; or
  • sell accounts, virtual currency, virtual items, services or access for real-world value without our written approval.

Player content and community features

You keep any rights you own in text, names, screenshots and images you submit. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, copy, format, display, moderate and distribute that content only as reasonably needed to run, protect and promote the Service. You confirm you have the right to submit it.

  • Company chat, profile names, avatars, bug reports, support messages and public labels may be reviewed or moderated.
  • We may reject, hide, edit or remove content and restrict communication features where reasonably needed for safety, legality, privacy, quality or enforcement.
  • Do not include sensitive personal information, precise home locations or information about another person without authority.

Suspension, correction and termination

We may warn, restrict, suspend or terminate an account where we reasonably believe these terms were broken, the account threatens players or the Service, payment was reversed, the law or a platform requires action, or continued access creates material risk.

  • Urgent protective action may be immediate. Where appropriate, Support can review an explanation or appeal.
  • Termination may remove access to progression, virtual currency, virtual items, linked accounts, Companies and unclaimed rewards.
  • You may stop using the Service at any time and may permanently delete your account from Account & settings. Deletion is deliberately protected by password, acknowledgements and an exact confirmation phrase.
  • Provisions that by their nature continue after termination—including intellectual property, audit integrity, payment records, limitations and dispute terms—continue to apply.

Intellectual property and third-party services

The Service software, artwork, game systems, branding and original content belong to us or our licensors. We give you a limited, revocable, non-transferable licence to use the Service for personal, non-commercial play while your account remains authorised.

  • OpenStreetMap and other map data remain subject to their own licences and attribution.
  • Steam, itch.io, Discord, Stripe, MEE6, map, routing, hosting and other third-party services have separate terms and may change or become unavailable.
  • Do not copy, redistribute, commercially exploit or create a competing service from protected Own the Map content except where law or an applicable open licence permits it.

Availability, responsibility and liability

We use reasonable care and skill but do not promise uninterrupted access, error-free data, permanent availability of any feature, compatibility with every device or preservation of Beta/test progress. Internet, platform and third-party failures may be outside our control.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, breach of rights that cannot lawfully be excluded, or any other liability the law does not permit us to limit. Subject to that, we are not responsible for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable when you agreed, business losses from consumer use, or loss caused by your breach, unsupported device, third-party platform or event outside reasonable control.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms for changes to the game, law, safety, providers or business operation. Material changes will be shown in the Service and require fresh acceptance before continued play. The effective date and version identify the terms you accepted. Changes do not remove rights that arose before the change where the law prevents that.

Law, disputes and contact

Please contact Support first so we can try to resolve a problem. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you are a consumer elsewhere, you retain mandatory protections and court rights provided by the law where you live. If one term is unenforceable, the rest remain in effect. A delay in enforcing a term is not a waiver.
